Peace talks on Cyprus to restart…

The Cypriot president and the Turkish Cypriot leader have agreed to resume talks on reunifying the island.

The deal was struck at a meeting between Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat in Nicosia - the first such high-profile talks since 2006.

The two men also agreed to reopen a key crossing in the divided capital.

Greek and Turkish Cypriots have been divided since 1974, when Turkey deployed troops after a coup by Greek Cypriots who wanted union with Greece.

“This is a new era we are starting for the solution of the Cyprus problem,” Mr Talat said after the meeting in a UN buffer zone near the abandoned Nicosia airport.

“We shall try our utmost in order to come to an agreed solution for the interest of the Cypriot people, both communities, as soon as possible,” President Christofias said.

In a statement the McCanns said they were pleased that the newspaper group… had admitted the “utter falsity” of the “grotesque” stories written about them. The newspaper group has paid £550,000 to the Find Madeleine campaign. It said it had been wrong to suggest the couple, of Rothley, Leicestershire, were responsible for Madeleine’s death.

Madeleine disappeared, days before her fourth birthday, during a family holiday in the resort of Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, on 3 May last year.

Her parents, Kate and Gerry, have been named as suspects in the case by Portuguese police but have always denied any involvement. Read the entire article here..

At least four people have been killed and about 200 injured in a series of explosions at an arms depot near the Albanian capital, Tirana.

A spokeswoman for Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha said it was feared the number of dead could rise.

The explosions occurred as three teams of specialists were dismantling obsolete munitions at the base.

The first blasts set off o ther explosions, which lasted several hours and caused widespread damage.

The force of the blasts was felt in Tirana and the coastal resort of Durres, some 20km (12.5 miles) away, and heard in neighbouring Macedonia.

The prime minister’s spokeswoman, Juela Mecani, said a number of homes near the depot were “completely destroyed”.

Flights at Mother Teresa Tirana International Airport, several kilometres from the base, were suspended for 30 minutes after windows there were shattered.

The injured were admitted to hospital at Durres, as well as the capital’s military hospital and a civilian health centre.

Most of those arriving at Tirana’s military hospital were civilians brought in a stream of ambulances and private cars. Many were women and children.

Ms Mecani told Reuters news agency: “We do not know the exact number [of casualties].

“But we fear the worst for the three teams, each of 21 people, working there at the time. Several were US citizens.”

The US embassy in Tirana said it could not confirm the presence of US personnel at the site.

Human error?

A government statement said four bodies had been recovered from the site, and emergency services were working to retrieve more dead and injured.

About 200 people were already being treated in hospital, it added.

It started out – like all good ideas, some might say – as a dream.The vision was so clear in George St. George’s mind he couldn’t get back to sleep. He couldn’t even stop when his wife, Peggy, asked what he was doing up in the middle of the night.“It shot me right out of bed, and the cell phone was sitting right in front of my face – the image of it,” he said.

That was a few months ago. Since then, the Greece man has joined the likes of famous inventors Thomas Edison and Charles Kettering – the guy who came up with freon and the first electric starter for cars – in getting a patent. His is for the Stick It Buddy, manufactured right in his Mount Read Boulevard home.

The device, about the size of a cell phone, allows hands-free cell phone use while driving. A holder with Velcro wraps around the seatbelt. Slap another piece of Velcro (it comes with it) on the back of the phone, and stick it to the holder. It’s adjustable, so you can slide it near the driver’s ear or on your lap.

The device stays attached to the seatbelt and the phone pops right off. But you might need some reminding it’s there.

“You get out of your truck and say, ‘Where’s the cell phone?’” Peggy St. George said, chuckling.

And at $7.95, it’s a lot cheaper than a ticket, St. George said.

He has passed it out to family and friends and hopes it helps them stay safer on the roads. He’s found other uses for it, too, like attaching it to a backpack or purse strap to keep the phone handy.

St. George, 65, has racked his brain trying to figure out where the idea came from. Perhaps his driving-based occupations – he used to drive tractor trailers and is now a self-employed plasterer – planted the seed.

But once the idea came to mind, St. George worked at perfecting it, trying out different materials until he got it just right. Then, he applied for a patent, which he received last November. Now, he’s focusing on selling his device through word-of-mouth advertising and is developing a Web site for it.

Long before he started American Plaster and Drywall, St. George was an amateur magician and balloon artist, did some carpentry and was even a professional clown on the side. He tinkered with inventions but never got anything patented. Married for three years, St. George considers his wife part muse, part good-luck charm.

“Since I met her, all kinds of good things have happened,” he said.

He encourages anybody – no matter the age – to keep working at his or her goal. He himself might have more inventions to come.

“It makes you feel like there’s so much to be invented out there,” St. George said.

He’s certainly in good company, besides Edison and Kettering and all the other inventors. Paul McCartney supposedly came up with the melody for “Yesterday,” the most covered song in history, in his sleep.

Italy’s highest appeal court has ruled that married Italian women who commit adultery are entitled to lie about it to protect their honour.

The court gave its landmark ruling after hearing the case of a 48-year-old woman, convicted of giving false testimony to police by denying she had lent her mobile phone to her lover.

The appeal court did not agree that she had broken the law.

It said bending the truth was justified to conceal extra-marital relationships.

In a predominantly Catholic country you might expect the courts to take a dim view of lying and adultery.

But not in this case.

The woman who brought the appeal was from Porto Ercole on the Tuscany coast, and named only as Carla.

She had lent her telephone to her secret lover, Giovanni, who then used it to call Carla’s estranged husband, Vincenzo, and insult him.

Giovanni, the lover, was convicted of abusive behaviour in a local court, and Carla convicted as an accessory.

Controversial judgements

But the Court of Cassation found that having a lover was a circumstance that damaged the honour of the person among family and friends.

Lying about it, therefore, was permitted, even in a judicial investigation.

It is not yet clear whether the ruling might also apply to men who have secret mistresses.

The Court of Cassation, which is largely staffed by elderly male appeal judges, has in the past issued a number of controversial judgements.

It once gave a ruling, later rescinded after protests from women’s groups, that a woman could not be raped by definition if she was wearing tight jeans, since the jeans could only be removed with her consent.
