The richest man of the world (according to FORBES)…

warren-buffett.jpg

Net Worth: $62.0 billion

Fortune: self made

America’s most beloved investor is now the world’s richest man. Soared past friend and bridge partner Bill Gates as shares of Berkshire Hathaway (nyse: BRKA - news - people ) climbed 25% since the middle of last July. Son of Nebraska politician delivered newspapers as a boy. Filed first tax return at age 13, claiming $35 deduction for bicycle. Studied under value investing guru Benjamin Graham at Columbia. Took over textile firm Berkshire Hathaway 1965. Today holding company invested in insurance (Geico, General Re), jewelry (Borsheim’s), utilities (MidAmerican Energy (other-otc: MDPWL.PK - news - people ) , food (Dairy Queen, See’s Candies). Also has noncontrolling stakes in Anheuser-Busch (nyse: BUD - news - people ) Coca-Cola (nyse: KO - news - people ) Wells Fargo (nyse: WFC - news - people ) Insurance operations flourished in 2007. “That party is over. It’s a certainty that insurance-industry profit margins, including ours, will fall significantly in 2008.” The Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ) of Omaha issued a challenge to members of The Forbes 400 in October; said he would donate $1 million to charity if the collective group of richest Americans would admit they pay less taxes, as a percentage of income, than their secretaries. Had long promised to give away his fortune posthumously. Irrevocably earmarked the majority of his Berkshire shares to charity in 2006, mostly to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Gift was valued at $31 billion on day of announcement; donation will far exceed that sum so long as Berkshire shares continue to rise.

Net Worth: $60.0 billion

Fortune: self made

Second-richest man in the world this year; even richer than Microsoft’s Bill Gates, at least for now, thanks to strong Mexican equities market and the performance of his wireless telephone company, America Movil (nyse: AMX - news - people ) The son of a Lebanese immigrant, Slim made his first fortune in 1990 when he bought fixed line operator Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) in a privatization. In December, America Movil struck a deal with Yahoo (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) to provide mobile Web services to 16 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. A widower and father of six, Slim is a baseball fan and art collector. He keeps his art collection in Mexico City’s Museo Soumaya, which he named after his late wife. In recent years, he has donated close to $7 billion worth of cash and stock to fund education and health projects, and to the revitalization of Mexico City’s downtown historical district.

Net Worth: $58.0 billion

Fortune: self made

Harvard dropout and Microsoft visionary no longer the world’s richest man. Blame Yahoo: Microsoft shares have fallen 15% since the company boldly attempted to merge with the search engine giant to better fight Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) for Internet dominance. Gates is preparing to give up day-to-day involvement in the company he cofounded 33 years ago to spend more time focused on his philanthropic endeavors. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has $38.7 billion in assets, donates to causes aimed at bringing financial tools to the poor, speeding up the development of vaccines (for AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis), bettering America’s lagging high schools. Sells 20 million Microsoft shares every quarter, proceeds going to private investment vehicle Cascade (nyse: CAE - news - people ) more than half of net worth now outside of Microsoft. Company spent $6 billion to land Web ad firm Aquantive last May. Would-be rival to Apple (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) s iPod, the Zune, not yet a hit. Believes Microsoft’s far-flung bets, including 10-year affair with Internet-based television, may soon pay off; says next 10 years will be the “most interesting” in software history.

  • 26. Estoy Feliz  |  April 7, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Shame on these lazy bastards asking for money, without trying themselves. Most people on this list are self-made billionaires, they worked their own sweat off to build what they aquired.

  • 27. JACOB OFORI  |  April 8, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Ok, i think i am the richest man on earth now but nobody seems to notice this but i am want the whole world to know they are mistaken if they think Bill Gate is the richest man in the World……….. Though i have nothing to show for it now but i know i am the Richest man in the world and the whole world must hear of this

  • 28. Kelvin KM  |  April 12, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Don’t insult. They may have tried also and they may be trying! I have tried to do my best except my best is not yet good enough. Worked as a volunteer for UN for a year nd all I could manage was enough for an Airticket from Zambia to USA. Getting married to an American in two weeks. I have no many for a honeymoon. I just wish I had money, or even able to borrow some to make the occasion memorable! but such is life…

  • 29. daviedaniels  |  April 12, 2008 at 9:59 pm

i hate people who ask too much from the rich. they also have problems to solve. take a look at bill gates who shifted to position three. lets give them a break ant time to take their breath.

secondly i want to start personal business, so please may i get tips from those rich guys if it is possible.

  • 30. emeka  |  April 14, 2008 at 2:05 pm

i really believe one day, i will be on the list of the richest men in the world

  • 33. George Iroha  |  April 20, 2008 at 4:44 pm

I believe all wealth made is for a purpose, either to help the poor or to change your society. The richest man on planet earth that has not redefined his purpose on earth is poorer than the poorest man on earth.

  • 34. Gen. Ndy Dan  |  April 21, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Bravo to u guys. But be on guard cos i am going to overtake all of you in no time. Also the true networth of a man is his ability to put a smile on the faces of the poor around the world and not just being a billionaire on paper. The world is looking for Billionaires of impact.

I beleive in integrity and uprigthness. Even though, a Nigerian was not included in your list. I have this strong believe that we have people who can be included in the world richest men. Apart from my strong opinion, i’ve great respect for you list. Irrespective of the fact that we’ve some credible rich Nigerians. Scrutinise their source of income before you include them in your list.

    Thank you.

for this guys that has made it, have you heard about those people that held this position before, how they died, where would the money be? that is to show that if you are happy, you are richer than them. you have whot it takes to be richer than bill gate, just sticked to your passion. they all did in their, chosen field. you are not poor, until you think you are, you are just someone waiting for an opportunity to launch yourself. just keep the focus, be determined, and open minded, you will see in no time, you will be richer than you could ever imagine. yuo are simply unique. dont try to be anybody be yourself, thats where the wealth ls. ay2rock@yahoo.com

    HI,
It good to be rich, everyone could wish to be rich and this is why we struggle day by day.All the richness comes from God and therefore for these richest please for you to feel your richness it is should be transmitted to others e.g through assistance to the less able inorder for them also to go a step a head.

for me i know am not rich and that is why i am majoring in my education,i call upon anyone willing to help me achieve what i want through financial assistance so that later on i can also help others and also become amongest the richest.

  • 51. Tunde Olaleye  |  June 2, 2008 at 10:58 am

These rich men and women are self made individuals who have struggled up the ladder of progress and have climbed on the shoulders of those who have obtained to get to there position now. Surely, the same can’t be said of our African leaders. They have trampled on their people, squandered and stolen their nations’ wealth. These African “leaders” can’t come out in the open to tell us how they made it.

its nice to know that people can rich to the extent that they have to be ranked the most richest. i dont envy them, rather i see it as a challenge to work harder so i can live a comforttable life and imact positively to my society. of all the richest, i see bill gates as an inspiration to me, he defied all odds to be who he is today, so its not all been the richest, its all about impacting something that will print your name in sands of time.
