‘Ugly’ fruit back on sale in EU

Curly cucumbers, crooked carrots and mottled mushrooms – odd-looking fruit and vegetables are making a comeback as 20-year-old EU rules are lifted.
Marketing standards for 26 types of produce have been scrapped, in a drive to cut EU bureaucracy.
The standards will remain in place for 10 of the most popular types. But with an appropriate label shops will be able to sell “ugly” specimens of these too. (more…)

Transformers still rule UK cinema

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has stayed at the top of the UK and Ireland box office, taking £4.3m in its second week of release.
The movie was well ahead of comic caper The Hangover, which took £1.9m and remained steady in second spot.

Swiss bust child pornography ring

An inquiry was launched after a tip-off from Interpol about a website based in Switzerland being used as a forum for illegal child pornography films.

R&B singer admits Rihanna assault

R&B singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty in the US to one count of assault on his former girlfriend, pop star Rihanna.
Brown, 19, was sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to do six months of community service.
Brown had faced charges of assaulting Rihanna, 21, during a row in February.
The last-minute plea deal came before a hearing at a Los Angeles court at which Rihanna was due to give evidence. She said.. (more…)

The Proposal tops US box office

Disney’s romantic comedy The Proposal has hit the top of the North American box office on its opening weekend, early estimates show.
The film, starring Sandra Bullock as a hard-nosed executive who coerces her assistant into a fake marriage to avoid deportation, took $34.1m (£20.7m).
It puts last week’s number one, bachelor party film The Hangover, in second place with $26.9m (£16.3m). (more…)

Woody Allen would like to use France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy for a film role, the U.S. director told RTL radio on Thursday.

Software ‘gives children a voice’
Scientists claim to have developed the first technology of its kind to allow children with communication problems to converse better.
‘How was school today?’ is software to help children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy communicate faster.
